KVIC had arranged for a person from the village to guide us and understand the process of Khadi making. While we were there it was the first time we noticed caste come into play with the weaver caste being distinctly identified. This identification by caste, bunkar as they were called, was rejected by them outright as they did not want to be associated with the title rather let it be known only as a profession. Although the Khadi model of self-reliance is often associated with Mahatma Gandhi, in many villages especially around Tokrala, it was Ambedkar who held a position in their minds with his pictures decorating the walls of many houses and an incident where ‘Jai Bhim’ – associated with Ambedkar, was written on the back of the car by which we were travelling was also recorded.enRural development & problemsstudy by studentsRural research project : KVIC- Khadi Village Industry Commission
