K.; Joshi, Rohan; Bhuria, SukumarThe National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) is a significant initiative introduced by the Ministry of Rural Development in India in 2010 to tackle rural poverty. Despite the country's impressive economic growth, a substantial portion of the rural population remains below the poverty line. To combat this issue, the government launched the NRLM, later renamed DAYNRLM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission) in 2016. This centrally sponsored scheme is funded jointly by the Central and State Governments. The implementation of the NRLM is overseen by State Rural Livelihood Missions, with District Mission Management Units at the district level and Block Mission Management Units at the block level. The mission is being implemented gradually in specific blocks each year, with the goal of mobilizing all rural poor households by 2023-24. The primary objective of the NRLM is to promote sustainable livelihoods for the poor, helping them escape poverty. It focuses on providing formal credit access, supporting livelihood diversification, and ensuring access to entitlements and public services.
