    Rural research project : SEWA
(MICA, 2018) Gupta, Deeksha; Dahiya, Eshita; Soni, Pulkit; Sharma, Sarandha
SEWA has an All India membership of 13,39,621 out of which 6,99,194 members are from Gujrat itself. The union is open for membership to self-employed women workers all over India with a membership fee of Rs. 5 per year. The union is governed by a two-tier level of elected representation where the members of each trade elect their representatives in the ratio of 1 representative per 100 members. Every three years the Trade Council elects an Executive Committee of 25 members. SEWA is both an organization and a movement. The SEWA movement is enhanced by its being a sangam or confluence of three movements: the labor movement, the cooperative movement and the women’s movement. But it is also a movement of self-employed workers: their own, home-grown movement with women as the leaders. Through their own movement women become strong and visible. The objective of our project was to create content that helps gauge the impact of AVKAAR trainings on the lives of SEWA members. AVKAAR (Aavrat Vikaas Karigari) is a training program run for SEWA members in association with Gap Inc. As a part of this project, we were required to come up with some form of audio and/or video content (which should be immersive) that talks about the impact on the lives of present members of SEWA due to AVKAAR training and to encourage people to join SEWA in their this newly launched initiative.
