    Rural Research Project: Khajjiar
(MICA, 2014) Jacob, Jennifer; Kapoor, Ankur; Kumar, Aditya
Khajjiar (32.5462° N, 76.0581° E), christened ‘Mini Swiss or Switzerland’ by Mr. Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India in 1992, is a village located at a hill station 24 kilometres from Chamba and 16 kms from Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh. It is among the 160 topographic areas that hold resemblance with the Swiss nation. Situated 6500 feet above sea level, the locus area is a plateau with a gradually shrinking lake surrounded by Deodar trees, Dauladhar Mountains and belongs to the Kalatope Sanctuary. Khajjiar has gotten its name from the ‘Khajji nag’ (serpent god) deity, whose temple lies close to the lake. Besides being at the heart of the village economy due to tourism, the lake is the locus of social activity in the village around which settlements, schools, forest department office, hospitals, panchayat, police chauki, restaurants etc. have been built. Khajjiar thus is a novel tryst of lake, forest and pasture making it a popular about short-duration tourist spot. It belongs to the Kangra Lok Sabha constituency and PIN code 171 015.
