PMKSY not only concentrates on establishing sources for assured irrigation but also on creating protective irrigation through micro-level rainwater harvesting via “Jal Sanchay” and “Jal Sinchan”. The scheme incentivizes micro-irrigation, promoting efficient utilization of water resources in agriculture to achieve higher crop yields per unit of water. This involves the encouragement of precision irrigation systems, such as sprinkler and drip irrigation, as well as the adoption of rainwater harvesting and other water-saving technologies. The Government of India extended the WDC-PMKSY initiative on December 15, 2021, renaming it 'WDC-PMKSY 2.0' for the period 2021-2026. The revised plan sets a physical target of 49.50 lakh hectares with an indicative Central financial outlay of Rs. 8,134 crore.
