However, in recent years, global climatic shifts and anthropogenic activities have posed significant threats to our water resources. Erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and over-exploitation of water bodies have cast shadows over agricultural productivity and livelihoods, especially in rainfed regions. This challenge is particularly acute in India, a nation with a deep agrarian legacy, where a significant portion of its population is directly dependent on farming and related activities. Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the imperative to secure the future of its farming community, the Indian government launched the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchaayi Yojana (PMKSY). This ambitious national mission embodies a commitment to bolster farm productivity and ensure judicious resource utilization, positioning water at its core. The Watershed Development Component (WDC) of PMKSY is a significant pillar of this mission. Originating from the framework of the ‘Integrated Watershed Management Program (IWMP)’ initiated in 2009-10, the program underwent a strategic amalgamation into the broader PMKSY in 2015-16.
