Rural Immersion Programme: Designing Communication Strategy for DSC
(MICA, 2016) Pillai, Nitin; Vijay, Nitya; Agarwal, Radhika; Yenna, Shirisha; B S, Vishnu
The DSC is involved in implementation of various programmes in rain-fed and irrigated areas of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh (M.P.). It directly promotes Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) program in about 1 lakh hectares of 4 major and 4 medium irrigation projects located in both these states. The organization has facilitated WUAs, branch and project level federations in more than 200 villages. It is the largest NGO in India working in the irrigation sector with its PIM projects cited as models in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. It is also promoting sustainable agriculture activities and farmer led value chain development activities in both rain-fed and irrigated areas of Gujarat and M.P. with the help of government and other donors. As part of our field study, the first village we visited was the Thalota Village in Mehsana district. The objective was to conduct the impact analysis of the communication material rolled out by DSC for the farmers. To achieve the above-mentioned objective, we met the important stakeholders of the village and conducted in depth interviews using the funneling technique. In general, the awareness about DSC in this particular village was quite high, primarily because this was the place where DSC launched its pilot project on Water Shed Irrigation and Canal construction in 1995. Only one third of the total population of Thalota village are engaged in agricultural activities. Rest of them are involved in small businesses and have agriculture as their supporting occupation.
