Item Rural Immersion report on Open Defecation in Sabarkantha Gujarat, India : Situation analysis for Open Defecation and social behavioral change plans(MICA, 2019) Parikh, Aayushi; Balachandran, Amrutha; Buch, Arshavi; Satuluri, Neelima; Gupta, SurbhiThe report is based upon the qualitative research conducted in Sabarkantha District of Gujarat under which we covered Poshina and Khedbrahma as main villages. Under each we covered three and two sub villages respectively. Under Poshina, we covered Demti, Kajavas and Padapath and under Khedbrahma, Kanthapura and Bandiya nu Talav were covered. The objective of the research was to understand the condition of sanitation and hygiene in the above-mentioned villages. Water and Sanitation are listed as Goal number 6 under UN India Sustainable Development Goals. Narrowing down the issue, we focused on the problem of Open Defecation in the villages. Families in Poshina and Khedbrahma have agriculture as their main occupation. September is their ‘plotting’ season which is their way of improving their cotton crop breed and hence families remain busy since morning in the fields, come back to rest in the afternoon and then return back to their late afternoon. This season is so important for them that they even take their children to the fields for work, not caring about the latter missing their schools. As agriculture is their major source of income, during the scarce days, men resort to odd jobs in the nearby towns while majority of the men of the family resort to vices like ‘jua’ (gambling) and Daaru (hooch liquor).
