Item Rural Research Project: Dhankar(MICA, 2014) Abhinav M.; Vasuded, Atul; Mediratta, ChiragThe land is roughly terraced and the houses are spaced apart along the descent of the hill. There are 68 houses with a population of around 400-420 people. All the houses have a similar structure and most of them had 2 floors. The soil is mainly black and yellow coloured The terrain is extremely hilly and this place is a cold desert. This kind of topography clearly makes everyday life a difficult task. The people are used to climbing up and down the steep slopes. Terraced farming is practiced in this region and the farms are either placed towards the descent of hill or alongside a stream that flows across the village from top to down. The source of the spring is a lake that is 5 kms above the village. All the residents of the village are Buddhists and therefore there is no segmentation based upon religion. There are scheduled tribes and scheduled castes in the village and among the tribes there are two sects, namely Chering Palden and Cherring Tandup, the former being the lower one. The other kind of segmentation is based upon the kind of work the people do. There are singers, dancers, blacksmiths, etc.
