Abstract
In 2018, long before artifi cial intelligence had become a ubiquitous presence in everyday conversations, NITI Aayog, India's public policy think tank, released a report that highlighted the need for a national strategy to support the development of AI and meet future needs. Focusing on AI projects for the key sectors of agriculture, health, and education, the report spoke about not only partnerships with industry players but also addressed the matter of potential ethical issues in the implementation of AI technology in these sectors. Fast forward to 2025, the India AI Governance Guidelines released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology echo the same sentiments. In a vast country such as India’s, it is important to both acknowledge the potential contribution of AI to the Indian economy, as well as build guidelines to shape its growth.
