Rural Research Project: Varsna

Abstract

Varsna is a village which is 5 kms. away from the Sanand Bus Depot and is a fringe village. It has a total population of 1916- 1014 of which are male and 902 are females. The total number of voters here are 1224. The area of Varsna is 890 hectares. The type of soil in this area is black soil. Since, Sanand is an industrial district it has a number of factories close by. The Tata Nano plant is the latest addition to the large number of existing factories. A sizeable number of villagers are therefore employed as workers in the local factories. The two notable CSR activities in the area are the Tata Nano RO unit and the Ambuja Cement CSR Project in the village. People have a favourable attitude towards industrialization, in general, and the factories around them in particular. There is a sense of pride that the villagers feel because of the Tata Nano plant in their vicinity. Tata has set up an RO Unit for water purification which is constructed at the entrance of the village in the school premises. This is a site which is accessible to all and hence is visited by all. The water available here is purified by RO technology and hence is sweeter, according to the villagers.
