Rural Immersion Project – Area: Bhuj, District: Katchchh, State: Gujarat
The foundation started out as an organisation focused on providing learning modules in science and math to government school students. They were assigned a project in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat to carry out the above project in 500 government schools.During the course of this project, Mrs. Swati Bedekar, who set up the foundation, noticed that girls stayed absent for 5-6 days every month, the reason for their absenteeism being menstruation. She realised it was an issue that prevailed widely in these areas and was a concern few were willing to solve. Even though number of women who use hygienic means to manage menstruation in India is pegged at just 12-15% , this has already opened up a new challenge- How to handle the staggering amount of Sanitary waste? Sanitary waste disposal has become an increasing problem in India. The plastic used in disposable sanitary napkins are not biodegradable and lead to health and environmental hazards. With the average cost of a sanitary pad falling anywhere between Rs. 8-10, girls and women in rural areas resort to other means of flow control such as using a piece of cloth, leaves with mud stuck on them etc. because they are unable to afford standard branded products available in the market. Another reason behind low usage of pads is the resistance to move away from age-old practices that have been followed by women in households.
