Rural Immersion Project – Village : Mallamanina Hatti, District: Belgaum, State: Karnataka
Seventy percent of India lives in the villages and they are the next big thing when it comes to markets and products. With the media saturation and clutter that is growing at alarming rates in the urban areas, expanding to the rural areas is the way ahead. To do so it is important to understand how exactly does rural India work. What is a normal day in an Indian village? What kind of social structure exists? What is the culture? What are the issues that need to be tackled? What are the media consumption patterns today? All these questions need to be answered before we dive head long into the rural sphere, and this is what we have tried to do here. This is a report based on 7 days spent in a village in the Belgaum district called Mallahatti. Mallahatti is a village with quite a high literacy rate. As research was carried out about the region, it was found out that the Gokak taluka (including Mallahatti village) has an average literacy rate of approximately 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; male literacy is around 80%, and female literacy is around 65%. These are approximate figures as given by the Sarpanch.
