Rural Research Project: Khurik

Abstract

The district got its name from the two different mountain tracts called Lahaul and Spiti. The two tracts are a different development block as well as separate sub division. Lahaul has its headquarters located at Keylong and Spiti has its headquarters located at Kaza, which is again a district in Lahaul & Spiti district. The one river that flows through the Spiti Valley is the Spiti River; it originates from Kunzum pass and divides the region in Kaza and Samdoo. The river flows in the south eastern direction and finally submerges in the Sutlej River flowing through the region, Khab in Kinnaur. Lahaul Valley The name of the Lahaul Valley is coined from the word “Lho-yul” which is the Tibetan “Country of the south” or of Lhahl-yul, the “Country of the Gods”. The other meaning of the name come from the word “La” which means mountain pass and thus the name of the Lahaul Valley can stand as “The land of many mountain passes”.
