Abstract
As part of our rural immersion programme, we had the opportunity to measure the impact of construction of a well in two villages, situated in Gujarat, India. The villages are Nagrala & Jafarpura, both belonging to the district Dahod.
Dahod district has a literacy rate of 45.46%. The district falls in the region of Middle Gujarat belonging to agro-climatic zone - III of Gujarat state. The average normal rainfall for the district is 1000mm to 1150 mm. Erratic and long dry spells are common even in rainy seasons. Therefore, the district faces drought situations frequently. Maize and Paddy are the two major kharif crops of the district while wheat and gram are the principal crops grown in rabi season. Bullocks are the main source of farm power. Although the district has an impressive cattle wealth, their productivity is very low as the cattle are poorly maintained.
The project was to measure the impact and implications of the installation of the well, built by the community and its extent into various aspects of their lives. Some of the factors that were to be considered were impact on Crop production, How much increased Production from the same Area/Field, Changing in cropping Pattern Single (Kharif )Crops to Double/Triple crop (Kharif,Rabi,Summer), Impact on Socio Economic condition, Health Status, Impact on Livestock , Milk Production, Vegetable Production,Fodder Production, Drinking Water & Irrigation Water Problem and solution.
