Abstract

What is the power of sport? Is it something that teaches us the necessary life skills? Does it teach us how to be a part of a team and work well in a group? Does it teach us to also look outside the sport? Or does it teach us about privilege? Tanvie Hans says it teaches you all of those things and more. Hear about it from Tanvie, the first woman footballer from India to play for the big leagues in England and also the first Indian woman to captain a men’s team in a predominantly men’s league. We follow her journey through football from when she was an 8-year-old child, playing in school, to playing for teams like Tottenham Hotspurs and Fulham in England and finally to now, where she is striving to empower women and young girls through football. She talks about how just believing in oneself can make an ordinary story extraordinary and the extent to which difference can be made to lives if one just makes the requisite efforts. One of the most prominent and inspiring voices for women in sports in India, Tanvie Hans started her football journey in Delhi and went on to play for legendary European clubs such as Tottenham Hotspurs and Fulham FC. Now back in India, she plays in multiple leagues, including the Amateur League, becoming the first woman to play in the league. She is constantly striving to make a difference on and off the field with several football related projects and associations with NGOs, and is in the process of surrendering her British citizenship to be able to play in and hopefully for India. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
