Rural Research Projcet: Swades

Abstract

The Swades Foundation is a registered Section-8 (not-for-profit) company and all our operations and projects are undertaken as part of this company. Ronnie Screwvala along with his wife Zarina Screwvala with an initial corpus of Rs 1,000 began SHARE (Society to Heal Aid Restore Educate) and continued to progress in small steps. SHARE began by starting a sheltered workshop for the mentally challenged in the Dharavi and Chembur areas of Mumbai which provided training and employment opportunities for young adults. The lack of safe and secure drinking water & toilets is a major hurdle in the country's growth. Waterborne diseases affect 37.7 million Indians annually. In India, diarrhoea alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily. The World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water. In Rural India 86% people do not have access to a toilet. In addition to the problems surrounding drinking water, water scarcity for agricultural and other use causes chronic economic and social issues. Despite 3600mm of annual rainfall, the soil and terrain of rural Maharashtra, our current geography, makes water management a severe problem.
