Abstract

As mentioned earlier, the primary occupation of this place is fishing. Fresh water fishing is done in the rivers and tanks and reservoirs. River water fishing is carried out in Godavari River. The major varieties of fishes available in the district are Catla, Rohu, Pomfret, Bombay fish, Silver fish and Rigola. The income of these fishermen is erratic. They go for sail for about 8 months and the other 4 months; they stay at home doing nothing. July and August is the time when the sea is closed and fishermen have to stay at home. That is because it a part of their festival “Narali Purnima” to worship sea during that period. The women here engage themselves in small business like making pickles out of dry fish and prawn and selling them in the village or sometimes exporting to Vashi. They also go to nearby towns such as Guhaghar and Chiplun. They prefer going in a group of 5-6. They leave home by 4 am and reach home back by 6 pm.
