Rural Immersion Project – Village : Grahanu, District: Kangra, State: Himachal Pradesh
The villagers are extremely calm and patient and live in absolute harmony with their neighbors. The sex ratio is 40:60, female: male. They are like one big family and usually marriages don’t happen within the village. They look out for brides and grooms outside the village. The predominant style of marriage is the arranged one. There is not much of a hierarchy in terms of their occupation and household income. The main occupation is doing construction work and other labor in bigger villages like Naddi or in McLeodganj. However, there are a few big houses in the village, including that of an engineer who has come back to his village after his education, some who have land and houses in neighboring villages and hence use that as a source of income. However, even those with big houses with more than one television set, have people from the house doing labor work.
