Rural Immersion Project – Village : Sirigao, District: North Goa, State: Goa
A lot of villagers who we talked to said they would want to move to a better place because of the ill effects of mining like ground water depletion etc. Most of these people send their children to schools in the nearby village called Assonara. The Saint Clara School in Assonara is where around 80 percent of the children study. The rest of the children are in a government school in the village which has a visiting teacher. Most of the parents that we had talked to wanted their children to study preferably out of Goa for their graduation courses i.e. in Maharashtra. They believed that the culture in Goa is pretty lax or laidback and hence the children will not be serious. The literacy rate and the sex ratio in the village is also pretty high. According to the BDO at Bicholim, the village of Sirigaon also boasts of a 80 plus literacy rate and a healthy sex ratio of 970 plus per 1000.
