Rural Research Project: Mylom

Abstract

Mylom is a small Village/hamlet in Kottarakkara Taluk in Kollam District of Kerala State, India. It comes under Kottarakkara Panchayath. It belongs to South Kerala Division and is located 29 Kms towards East from District head quarters Kollam and 70 Km from the State capital Thiruvananthapuram. Agriculture is the primary occupation of the villagers. Earnings through agriculture are earned either by cultivating on own land or in the forms of wages obtained by working as daily wage workers on agriculture land owned by others. Apart from the few Cashew nut factories Mylom population majority employs its workforce in agriculture. According to the people of Mylom they feel the Government has not taken adequate steps in the development of Industries and they always felt left out in this front. In Mylom village out of total population, 7841 were engaged in work activities. 71.30 % of workers describe their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months) while 28.70 % were involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months.
