Rural Research Projcet: Jaipur Rugs

Abstract

The research was carried out in multiple stages, ensuring that all our respondents be comfortable with us, consider us as one among them so that they can open up more and in turn give better results while deriving the data. Our respondents covered not just weavers or people directly involved in the rug making process, but also the other villagers who are also indirectly involved, and opinion leaders who had a lot of information to share with regard to the village as a whole. The Manchahas or the Artisan Originals has been a liberating experience, making them more self-sufficient and help them create something entirely of their own, which would have been a far fetched dream, if it wasn’t for the Manchaha programme by Jaipur Rugs. The rural craftsmen are pushed to the maximum of their potential, helping them create masterpieces that are showcased at a global level. We also got a glimpse into some of the other pressing issues in the village, like poor sanitation and limited education opportunities, and also high seasonal unemployment for which the outlook of the people need to be blamed first.
