While the users of some of the dominant resource-rich languages are reaping the benefits of technology every day, this revolution has bypassed most of the languages of the world. In the data-hungry world of technology development, over 5000 languages have no resources to develop technology in them. Computational linguistics researcher, Kalika Bali, talks of how innovative methodologies in creating language and speech technology systems can positively impact the under served language communities around the globe. Kalika works in the areas of Machine Learning, Natural Language Systems and Applications and Technology for Emerging Markets. Her research lies in the area of Speech and Language Technology, especially in the use of linguistic models to build a more natural human-computer interaction. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
