dc.description.abstractWe visited Udyog Bharati in Gondal which falls under the purview of KVIC - it organises weavers - predominantly women, from the area who weave khadi on a daily basis. The organisation is an enabler of sorts - by offering complaint work environment and a respectable work environment, it is inculcating empowerment and independence among these women - few of whom are unskilled or semi-skilled at best. Additionally, there is an attempt at financial deepening and awakening - opening of a bank account is mandated before a weaver joins the program. The compensation plan works on a fixed plus variable model - commensurate to amount of produce deposited at the end of the month. A portion of this compensation is for the purposes of welfare at a later stage, while another is reserved for the weavers to themselves purchase Khadi clothing for themselves and their families. Though in a semi-urban setting and removed from its primary TG, the KVIC outlet at Udyog Bharati deals with a few independent textile designers - from India and abroad as well as certain established names including Reliance and Raymond - which makes it a notable outfit in the larger picture that Khadi is. Khadi is losing its appeal to youth, while similar ethnic brands like Fabindia and Global Desi are capturing young India with their branding and storytelling.
