Abstract

Vashisht, a small village named after Sapta rishi Vashisht known for its hot springs and the temple lies on the left of the Beas river. The famous stone temple is dedicated to the famous sage Vashisht Muni. There are a lot of folk stories regarding the establishment of temples and its name. The villagers believe that sage Vashisht had established the Ram temple that lies in the epicentre of the village. The first story is about the cow Kamdhenu which used to leave the village every day and return in the evening. On returning the villagers realized that the cow had no milk remaining. They complained to Vashisht Muni who followed the cow next day. Maharshi saw that the cow reached a cave where there was a ‘murti’ where all the milk was given. Maharshi bought the ‘murti’ to the village and that is worshipped as the Ram temple now.
