Swachhagraha is a behaviour change education programme initiative by the Adani Foundation that takes inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha during the freedom struggle. The initiative aims at bringing about a behaviour change and creating a culture of cleanliness at a scale India’s freedom movement achieved. Targeting school children as its primary audience, it aims to promote civic consciousness among citizens through young leaders. Launched in 2016 with Centre for Environment Education (CEE) as knowledge and implementation partner, it was present in six cities in 650 schools as of 2017 (Adani Foundation, 2018). A Swachhagraha school – A school that has been officially on-boarded to the program initiative. It was meant to engage stakeholders in the institution. Schools could also volunteer to participate and enrol in the program online. Among theschools enrolled, the Adani chain of schools were also participants. 2. Preraks – They were the school teacher-in-charge. Considered as a key mentor and motivator of the programme, their function was to “support and guide students in developing the qualities that will make them a Swachhagrahi.” (Adani Foundation, 2018). They were to lead the whole school—all students, teaching and non-teaching staff, and parents in transforming the school into a Swachhagraha campus.
