Rural Immersion Project – Village : Mulkhed, District: Pune, State: Maharashtra
Even though the villagers claim that they do not have any differences due to caste we have noticed that the high caste people stay uphill while the low caste people have a separate colony of their own known as the ‘harijan colony’ down the hill, people belonging to other religion i.e Muslims also stay in this colony. Hinduism is practised by majority of the population, with a very few Muslim households. The Muslims are into business like travel or service, they do not do farming. Most of the people in the village have their own land for cultivation except for the immigrants (we had met two families from U.P). They are given a small land area to build their house and they pursue jobs like security service, tailor etc. The immigrants stay in a different colony but the villagers never forget to share their cultivated vegetables with them. The lady told us that they do not need to buy onion, as the people who cultivate them share with them.
