Rural Research Immersion Project – Village : Goraj, District: Ahmedabad, State: Gujarat
The visit to Goraj village gave us some wonderful insights into village life. The following pictures and the summary hopefully would give you a brief look into the general practices of the village and a deco in their usual life.  Daily Routine: The people in the village, as the perception about them goes, lead a very simple life. The women-folk wake up at 5 in the morning and fill water from the pipelines. Then they go for their daily ‘mazdoori’ from 9 AM to 12 noon, earning for their family Rs. 50 per day. They enjoy the little pleasures of life like watching TV, putting nail polish on their nails, reading the gossip sections of the newspapers and all  Outlook of the Society: The society was patriarchal in nature, like most of the villages in the country have been. However, there were instances when we could see that the women folk are treated with a lot of respect and are also given liberties of doing things in their own way. They hold important offices and their say is taken in matters of importance in the households. They are no longer shunned away in the narrow confines of their homes.  Religious Beliefs : The ladies tell us that the people in the village are devout hindus. We were lucky to be present there in the month of October where there celebrate their majot festival of garba. The village has 4 main temples, one each for every goddess, namely Chamunda (Thakurs), Kali (Rajputs), Shakti (Bharwars) and Lakshmi (Patels), each one in a different locality. They are also readers of the popular scriptures like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
