Enhancing the livelihood of self help groups, through focussed marketing & branding efforts, for the local produce in Valsad, under the Gujarat Forest Department”

Abstract

The area of interest chosen by the group for a rural study was ‘Livelihood & Sustainability’, as a result of which the group was assigned a project under the Gujarat Forest Department (GFD), Valsad to study and enhance the livelihood of self - help groups under the Gujarat Forestry Development Program (GFDP). In its essence, a livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from economic or other external stresses and shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both in the present and in the future without undermining the natural resource base (Chambers & Conway). Focused supply chain management, upscaling, marketing and branding efforts of the local produce, as well as analysing the market linkages, and market need gaps were the focus of this project to come up with adequate suggestions & recommendations, at the individual SHG (Self Help Group) level, and broader suggestions, applicable to all SHG’s. Thus, the main problem area of the project was to understand the challenges faced in marketing the rural produce, getting the right price and the right market for these products and solving their supply chain barriers. Also, there were problems in particular to the products being produced.
