The Gujarat Forest Department (GFD) is a government organization, which is responsible for protection, conservation and development of forest and wildlife of the state. Project Chhota Udaipur was undertaken by us as a part of an effirt to conduct an in depth research and identify how GFD can help the tribals in the district to maximise returns from the forest without destroying the forest. Prior to the intervention by the GFD, the tribal population in the villages adjacent to the forest areas, used the wood from the forest for personal and domestic purposes. This led to deforestation and reduction in the forest area. We interviewed the Gujarat Forest Department officials first to get an understanding of the problem from their point of view, to know the hierarchy of decision making and what were they expecting. Also we wanted to understand how much were they willing to invest in this and how far were they willing to go to make JFMCs a success.
