Rural Immersion Project – Area: Jambughoda, State: Gujarat
Jambughoda –a wildlife sanctuary in the state of Gujarat. The sanctuary is located about 293 kilometers from Ahmedabad and about 80 kilometers from Vadodara. A tribal population populates the region. This indigenous population is not privy to the basic amenities of life and is lagging in terms of basic literacy rate as well as life sustaining and earning skills and opportunities. This has led the locals to turn to the easiest, most accessible and the most profitable of the ways to obtain sustenance and livelihood- the forest. The entire region has an abundance of flora and fauna. This has been providing the locals with crops- used as cash crops as well as for usage. This has led to a depletion of the forest and the wildlife has also been affected by the deforestation. The scenario had reached such an extent that the forest fires happened at an average of two per month. The forest department of Gujarat hence took a decision to convert the entire forest area into protected zone. The forest and all of its resources have been deemed protected and hence no part of the forest can be destroyed. This has been a point of contention with the locals who have been affected. Although this concern has been alleviated by the Forestry Department by providing the locals with alternative sources of income as well as skill generation opportunities to sustain themselves, quite a few of the locals still indulge in the destruction of the forest- cutting down of trees for firewood and to be sold in the market. This was further addressed by the Government by setting up three Eco tourism resorts in the region.
