Abstract
It may seem strange that we keep going on and on with our lengthy introduction. But we think that it is important to be giving explanations as to why we did things in that manner.
Every methodology has some logic and thus, according to us, demands explanations. We definitely went about doing the usual stuff, i.e. taking interviews, conducting focus group
discussions, collecting data about the village, but what we felt that not all (or more particularly the spirit of the place) can be captured in this “official” way of doing things. We
therefore, went about talking to people informally. In these informal chats, we did not go about asking questions. We participated in what in Bengal is popularly known as “adda”. In
these informal chats, questions and answers were both ways. We played cards, carom with the people there, played cricket with the children, had food and drinks with the elders etc.- in
short, we did not just ‘stay’ there but ‘lived’ there. We made the village our own.
