Item Rural Research Project: Mawlynnong(MICA, 2015) Sharma, Ayshwarya; Das, Pragya; AdityanshuMawlynnong is situated in the East Khasi district, which is one of 11 districts of Meghalaya which is bound by Ri-Bhoi District on the north, Karbi Anglong District on the north east, Jaintia Hills district on the east, Bangladesh on the south and West Khasi Hills district on the west. Shillong is the district headquarter of East Khasi Hills District. The district consists of Eight Community and Rural Development blocks at present. Mawlynnong is part of Pynsurla district. Mawlynnong/Mawlynnong Village is also referred as ‘God’s own garden’ has won the acclaim of being the cleanest village in Asia in 2003. The village known for its extreme cleanliness is located around 90 kms from Shillong and is a community based eco-tourism initiative. The community makes collective effort to maintain the ambience of a clean and green village. The village offers picturesque natural beauty, a trek to the living roots bridge at a neighbouring village Riwai. The village also offers a sight of natural balancing rock, a strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock. In fact, the bed rock of using these natural artefacts to promote tourism was the idea of putting the village on the global map.
